作者三本书的合集——一本是《罗兰-巴特自述》，一本是《作家索莱尔斯》，一本是《偶遇琐事》。除第二本外，都带有传记色彩。当然，这样的传记色彩太特殊了，从那里面，你拼贴不出一幅完整的传主的样子，它破碎而失序，混乱而隽永，张扬而优雅。第一本直译为《罗兰-巴特论罗兰-巴特》，其时更贴切。一个大活人给自己写一部真切坦白的传记，即或是在今天也需要极大的勇气。所以卷首有罗兰-巴特的一句话：“这一切，均应被看成是出自一位小说人物之口”……我的疑问是，照此类推，他自己的这句题记是真是假？是烟雾还是烟尘吗？是自然雨还是人工雨？
所以，关于罗兰-巴特的故事，罗兰-巴特所提供的，只是由破碎、密集、自由并无限多解的文字构建而出的一个起点，它可能是虚构的，可能不是，没人知道。这样以来，所谓读或翻看，也就只是一个可能让空想的门窗洞开、意义的风和阳光和水和月光纷至沓来徜徉出入的开门的动作。这样，也就不难理解他为什么高度赞美发呆或空想：
“空想对于作家来说是亲密无间的，因为作家是意义的提供者。他的任务（他的享乐）就在于提供意义、名称，并且在只有存在着两种价值的聚合关系、是或不的松动关系、交替关系的时候，他才提供意义。在他看来，世界是一枚奖章、一枚硬币，是阅读的两个表面，他自己的真实占据阅读的反面，而空想则占据正面”……这样看，比所谓阅读即误读的判断更混乱也更迷人的是，阅读其实就是空想：有凭有据有板有眼的空想？
