我在2005年11月17日的读书日记中写过：“我从来没听过黑人灵歌，也不懂。可读《虚土》第一段，我脑子里忽然就蹦出这个词儿，为什么？‘我居住的村庄，一片土梁上凌乱的房屋，所有窗户向南，烟囱口朝天。麦子熟了头向西，葵花老了头朝东，人死了埋在南梁，脚朝北，远远伸向自家的房门，伸到烧热的火炕上，伸进家人焐热的被窝。’这就是这个长篇小说《虚土》的第一段，作者是刘亮程。‘被窝’那句让我的心软成驴打滚儿。陌生的‘灵歌’一词伴随蹦蹦跳跳。怎么啦？”
补记：我喜欢“情节“好的小说，也喜欢那种写得散漫随意全无清晰市场目标但却具有极高情感浓度的小说。本书属于后者。作者刘亮程写散文成名。在我看来，他的所有散文都像那种以极度情绪为主导的小说，同理，这本长篇，则更像一部附着着些许情节、幻觉、掌故与传说的漫长散文。
